Cosmetic Dentist Shares Oral Hygiene Tips

Posted on 10/5/2020 by Florida Smiles Dental
Tooth GraphicAt Florida Smiles Dental, we help patients brighten their smiles with cosmetic procedures like teeth whitening, veneers, and bonding. Our expert cosmetic dentists in Lighthouse Point agree, however, that good oral hygiene basics like brushing and flossing twice each day is key to achieving your happiest, healthiest smile. Flossing especially helps remove plaque and tartar from your teeth, plus keeps gum disease and bad breath at bay.

Differences Between Flosses

With all the advancements in the field of dentistry, there are many types of dental floss to choose from, so how do you know which is right for you? Keep reading – our Lighthouse Point cosmetic dentist breaks it down!

Unwaxed

Unwaxed dental floss is thin and made of nylon. Its size is beneficial because it fits well into tight spaces between your teeth. Some people use unwaxed floss because it’s thinner than waxed and has no flavor, but it can also be prone to shredding or breaking.

Waxed

Waxed dental floss is among the most popular because it glides easily between your teeth and is especially user-friendly for those with many tight spots, says our Lighthouse Point dentist. Made of nylon with a light wax coating, this type of floss is more durable than unwaxed and thus more efficient to use.

Polutetrafluoroethylene

Like waxed floss, this is a popular type of dental floss that’s made to slide through your teeth with ease. It is also available in a variety of flavors and is less prone to breakage than unwaxed floss.

Dental Tape

If you have larger spaces between your teeth, a dental tape may be the way to go. Dental tape is flat and wider than other types of floss, allowing you to fully clean between each of your teeth and around your gum line. It’s also available in waxed or unwaxed versions, depending on your preference.

You can encourage your children to floss daily by trying a variety of flavored dental floss – bubblegum, grape, or cherry are available, just to name a few. Some also find electric and disposable flossers more effective than traditional dental floss. Floss threaders are great for patients with braces as well. Regardless of which type you choose to maintain optimal oral health, make flossing a part of your daily dental regime.
