Teething Tips

Posted on 1/22/2022 by Florida Smiles Dental
woman brushing a baby's teethThe first of your child’s baby teeth can be expected around 6 months of age. Our Lighthouse Point FL dentist understands that it is hard for many parents to watch their baby in pain or discomfort as their first teeth begin to erupt. However, there are a few simple tricks that can help to ease the transition.

Your baby may be about to start teething if you notice mild irritability, drooling, a low-grade fever, or a heightened tendency to be chewing on items. On the other hand, some babies do not present signs of teething until you notice the new teeth themselves. Every baby is different, but for those that do experience pain, our Lighthouse Point dentist recommends turning to the freezer as your aid.

Chilling a teething ring works as a great outlet for your baby to chew on. The cool temperature acts as a natural numbing agent to help relieve your baby’s discomfort. Even a clean spoon can be left in the fridge for a bit to provide the same effects. You can let your child suck on the spoon or even rub the spoon against their gums.

A chilled pacifier is also an option. However, old advice given to dip your child’s pacifier in sugar or honey for relief is not recommended. Our dentist in Lighthouse Point FL says that these practices can damage the brand-new baby teeth and potentially lead to early cavities.

Another safe and effective method for soothing teething pain is massaging your baby’s gums. The method is as simple as using your clean finger to massage the irritated gums. You can also use a cool rag or gauze to do so. If you use a chilled material, the coolness in partnership with the applied pressure will feel good on the gums.

In general, our Lighthouse Point FL dentist says that natural, simple approaches such as gum massages and teething rings can be very effective to soothe pain. However, some babies may experience more discomfort than others. If you are concerned about your child’s pain level, our dental office in Lighthouse Point can help to suggest or prescribe more remedies, or perhaps an oral medication.

If you are interested in exploring more options to ease your baby’s teething discomfort, our 5-star Lighthouse Point FL dentist encourages you to call our Florida Smiles Dental to schedule a consultation!
