Replacing Your Toothbrush

Posted on 4/20/2020 by Florida Smiles Dental
image of toothbrushMaintaining a proper oral hygiene routine is necessary to keep your smile happy and healthy. The best dentist in Lighthouse Point, FL, recommends brushing and flossing twice each day, as well as using mouthwash to remove harmful bacteria that’s always accumulating on your teeth. Of course, a trip to your dentist for an exam and cleaning twice a year is also a crucial part of the process. What many people don’t realize, however, is the role your toothbrush plays in your oral health.

Experts say replacing your toothbrush every three months is integral to maintaining a clean and healthy mouth. One of the main reasons why is all the use. Since you’re supposed to brush twice each day, your toothbrush undergoes a serious amount of damage in the span of three months. The bristles that you rely on for that deep clean become worn and frayed, preventing them from being able to do their job. This opens the door to bacteria, plaque, and tartar buildup.

It’s no surprise that your mouth is producing bacteria all the time. Everything you eat and drink creates bacteria, plus it’s also something your mouth naturally produces. This means that every time you brush your teeth, you’re removing bacteria from your mouth, and exposing your toothbrush to germs.

But it doesn’t end there, your toothbrush also picks up germs from its environment. Most of us store our toothbrushes in the bathroom, which makes them vulnerable to the many germs that can be found there. Replacing your toothbrush every three months will help keep your exposure to these germs at a minimum.
