Now That I Have Received Tooth Fillings, How Long Will They Last?
Posted on 12/5/2022 by Florida Smiles Dental
A common question people will ask when seeking dental fillings is how long they will endure. Unfortunately, do not expect your fillings to last forever. Many things come into play when determining the lifespan of dental fillings. The type of filling, how it is fitted, and your oral hygiene or eating habits will determine how long the fillings last. Besides, people who grind and clench could have their fillings last shorter than expected. The cavity size is also another factor that influences the longevity of fillings.
Gold Fillings
Dentists use different kinds of tooth-filling materials including composite, porcelain, amalgam, and gold. Gold fillings are the longest-serving of all filling materials. They are most durable and can withstand biting and chewing forces for years. Expect your gold filling to last anywhere from 15 to 30 years. Usually, gold fillings are combination metals and not pure gold.
Amalgam Fillings
Silver fillings are considered the next most durable material after gold fillings. Also, they are the least costly option and have been the most commonly used fillings in the past. Amalgam fillings consist of silver and other metals like tin and copper. These fillings last for 10 to 15 years on average.
Composite Fillings
Made of resin, composite fillings are a popular choice because of aesthetic reasons. They are fabricated to match the natural tooth's color. However, they won't endure as much as the metal fillings.
Porcelain Fillings
These are made of ceramic material and are quite expensive. They also match the tooth's natural color. Porcelain is harder compared to resin. Even when used on high-impact teeth such as the molars, they can survive longer. Also, they are unlikely to stain when compared to resin. Porcelain fillings can last between five and 10 years.
