How to Take Care of Your Teeth during Pregnancy

Posted on 2/20/2023 by Florida Smiles Dental
How to Take Care of Your Teeth during PregnancyThe rise of hormone levels during pregnancy can make you prone to cavities and gum diseases. This can, in turn, affect you and the developing baby's health. Due to this, it is vital to take care of your teeth during pregnancy. Here are 3 tips for dental care while pregnant.

Improve Your Dental Hygiene

During pregnancy, hormone levels changes. Your body may start reacting differently to the bacteria in your mouth. This can result in bleeding gums or severe oral issues such as pregnancy gingivitis or periodontitis. Like with anyone's oral health, prevention is better than cure, which is the case with pregnant women. A good oral routine can help you prevent oral issues. This may involve regular flossing and brushing using fluoride toothpaste.

Eat a Balanced Diet

A balanced diet is vital in ensuring oral health. It helps to improve your body's immune system, which is essential in fighting oral issues such as inflammation and bleeding gums. While you may be craving candies and sweetened drinks, it is good to consider your dental health. When you consume a lot of carbs and sugar, they stick to the teeth. The bacteria in the mouth will then consume the carbs and sugar and produce acid, which destroys the teeth. In this case, paying attention to what you put into your mouth is vital.

However, it is advisable not to eliminate carbs completely during pregnancy. You can eat your daily meal in the form of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, plenty of water, and healthy carbohydrates.

Focus On Regular Dental Checkups

Many pregnant women skip dental visits for fear of interfering with the health of their developing babies. Unfortunately, this decision can put you and your baby at risk. Regular dental checkups during pregnancy are vital because hormonal changes can put you at risk of periodontal diseases. During the exam, the dentist can catch oral issues early and treat them before getting worse. Do you want to protect your oral health during pregnancy?
